Lunatik (12:45:12 PM): fokker
;) This past weekend was my roomate's wedding. Big congratulations to John and Jenita Varela! It was a beautiful wedding. Anyway, It seems a certain Lunatik drank a little too much and has forgotten sections of that night. I'm sure the parts that he DOES remember, will haunt him for the rest of his natural born life.

Wil Wheaton has an extremely well written blog site. He has since become one of my favorite Next Generation cast members. This is a prime example of how I've grown to respect his opinion.
Although the article Wil refers to is rather extreme, the author does bring up some good points. However, the world has grown to blame the U.S. for much of the problems that I don't see we having to do with. He makes too many generalizations, but I guess I'm guilty of that too as I've never been to certain parts of the worl. Yes. Maybe we do come on a little strong and our history shows evidence of that arrogant selfrighteousness. But I believe we're human and so are our leaders. They're not perfect and I don't expect them to be. I live in a nation were I'm allowed to speak up and disagree with my government. In fact, I believe it's our duty. And that is one point I agree with. We've become so jaded and used to others making decisions for us that the U.S. as a whole is weakend because the citizens don't want to participate. But it IS our government. People can complain and bitch and moan about what the military does and the decisions that our politicians make, but it's those decisions and actions that defend and protect the freedoms that I take full advantage of every day.

I found this to be a very interesting read. I had no idea about all the time and effort (and prayer) that went into making a traditional hawaiian canoe. This site has got everything you need to know including plans for building your own... if you have the time and money for one anyway.

Today's first link is probably the theme for the first part of my weekend... Although it started out that way, It eventually got better. :)
Didn't paddle at all this weekend. I went to the gym on Friday, but all in all it was a pretty lazy weekend for me. I kicked it on one of the chaseboats during the Kilohana Klassic this Saturday. We followed a 9-man race; 4 teams: Tamalpais, Benicia, Kilohana, and SFO. It was flat as a board out on the water wich is completely out of the ordinary. Usually the chop picks up around the afternoon, but no luck this weekend. For the most part, crews were pulling in dead water. Our team (Kilohana) accomplished our own personal goal, but after seeing them go for that long without a wave to carry them, I'm confident that they can do much better than that when the conditions are ono. I'm sure there was a little disappointment among the crew as it was, aside from a short-lived opportunity in the beginning, an uneventful race. From start to finish all four crews commanded their same placement; never relinquishing or advancing a spot on one another. I can't, however, dismiss the "short-lived opportunity." It really was a significant blow for Benicia. Their first waterchange was every crew's nightmare. Their boat came to a complete stop. The relieve paddlers were either positioned wrong, or the steersman aimed incorrectly because the change occured on the side opposite the ama. This, if I even HAVE to say it is less than desireable. This setback allowed Kilohana to advance to within a canoe length of them and nearly advancing a spot. Eventually Benicia managed to pulled away, but they could not contend with Tamalpais who eventually took first.
Saturday evening was where my weekend started to turn into a real party. I aquired a new basket rack for my RAV courtesey my awesome girlfriend Melissa, and we went to a housewarming at my friend Rianne's place. Makes me wish I invited the crew... they would have really enjoyed the girl to guy ratio. Too bad.

The rock is the king of Hawaii. Well, according to Hollywood he will be. Lots of people are making a big deal of it, but I'm not sure I agree with their arguement. The Rock is very marketable right now. That this should be used positively to make the mainstream listen sounds like a good Idea to me. As long as Dwayne portrays Kamehameha with the presence and respect that he deserves, why shouldn't he play the lead?

It's happened to me once or twice, but I didn't know it was such a common occurence. *cheers from the crowd* Can anyone else verify this? If so, it's good news for single folk.

I want one. But where in the bay area are you going to find a house with enough room in the backyard for this thing? And I don't know about the 7 months worth of work involved...

Much paddling happened this weekend... and some other stuff.
Saturday: 7:30 practice. That early in the morning, the water looks flat. It's quite decieving and although we know what's to come, the guys seem undaunted. It's just another day at work. So, I hide my anxiety. I've done a water change all of ONE time. And now I'm about to do it in the open water. To make the long story short... My very first 9-man run. We did 22 miles in 3 hours. Not a terribly terrific time, but not too shabby for my first run at it either. By the time I leave it's almost 2 o'clock.
Sunday: 7:00 Alcatraz Race at Crissy Field. It's the day of the Aloha Festival and we've got to rig the canoe. After yesterday's practice, this is a "fun" race for us. And fun it was. If there was any race that such overwhelming sites, this one was it. Usually one demands focus and concentration from oneself, especially during competition, but I couldn't help but look around in awe during this race. The turn around "The Rock" is so close, you can see every hole and rustmark in the prison walls. The site under the Bay Bridge was humbling. One wonders how man could make such a structure so immense and so grand. It really is bigger than you think it is. If you haven't seen the San Francisco skyline from the water, you haven't seen it in its best light. And within all this, there was the race. Same determination, drive, and anxiety as always. Notes: I paddled co-ed, we started in last place and ended up 10th out of about 20... not too bad huh?
The men's crew hulied out there the race right after ours so I'm guessing the waters got much harsher since we left the water. Remind me to add safety instructions to the links section in case the canoe flips over.
